Trichotillomania or Trich as it is otherwise known is another condition that manifests itself as hair loss.

The client who suffers from Trichotillomania has the obsessive urge to pull or twist out the hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes and or other body hair. This is often heightened during periods of illness or and emotional stress.

Trichotillomania is not selective of class or age. Trichotillomania can and does often leave the sufferer feeling alone and ashamed, when in fact it is believed the number of Trichotillomania sufferers in the UK is currently around 2.5%.

Care must be taken if diagnosing Trichotillomania, often the client is in denial and experiencing a sense of shame for what she/he is doing so may offer her condition up as Alopecia Areata.

The pulling of hair, (Trichotillomania) has been likened to obsessive compulsive disorder, where there are some similar indications probably "impulse control disorder" is a more accurate term. The condition is treated often by counselling from medical experts, however, unproven, but Trichotillomania has also been linked with a mineral deficiency.
